5 top destinations in Italy
I tend to believe the tourism was invented in Italy. For centuries, Rome has been the center of the World, well, a big part of the world and masses of people from all over Empire went to Rome for different businesses – from trading to joining the Army, to pay tribute or kiss the Emperor’s hand… And I am definitely sure there were some early-day travelers who came just to see the prestigious and glam city in the World. Well, this is what happens nowadays … millions of tourists from all over the world come to Italy for its ancient monuments, Middle Age palaces, fantastic food, sunny weather and unbeatable beaches. But let’s see which are the top 5 destinations in Italy.
Rome – the capital of Italy. This city was born to become a Capital of the World – it was the capital of the Roman Empire, afterwards, the Capital of the Worldwide Catholicism, now, it is de jure just the capital of Italy, but, de facto, a capital of the tourism. Rome has two historical parts – one is formed of the incredible remnants of the Roman Empire. Just wonder through the Foro Romano and visit one of the 7 “new wonders of the World” – Colliseum. The other one is the “modern” part built in the past few centuries – romantic streets, rich palaces, lively piazzas.
Venice – The wonderful city built on small islands is just a living museum. Each corner is a wonder, each small channel is flanked by palaces which would be the pride of any city in the world. Just take a gondola, the centuries-old highly ornate boats and ask your gondoliere to show you the hidden parts of Venice.
Florence – the capital of the Italian Renaissance, one of the most spectacular artistic expressions in the history. If you can see only one museum in this country full of museums, make it Uffizzi Galleries. It is not only one art history lesson, but also a moment of wonder and joy.
Pompei – Hey, history buffs, do you want to feel how people really lived 2000 years ago ? It is not a better and more genuine part than Pompei, the Roman city which was suddenly covered by ashes and lava generated by the eruption of the mighty Vesuvius volcano. Slowly unearthened as of the 200 years ago, a trip through Pompei is actually like a walk in time – you discover the real houses, stores, entertainment areas for a real ancient city.
Taormina – Let’s go also to the islands and choose Sicily, the sun-kissed island at the bottom of the boot-shaped Italy. Spectacularly built over a mountain which goes down towards the green-colored waters of Mediterranean, Taormina is a small historical town which managed to preserve its wonderful classical buildings in a dream-like location. Just walk the main street, enjoy the local sweets or a gelato and wait for the fantastic sunset.
Well, I guess I can easily write the “100 top destinations in Italy”, but I decided to limit myself to only 5. But I cannot refrain myself not to say that you should not miss the Italian seaside. After visiting the top top crowds attracting sites of Italy, why not look for a nice less crowded area. I would recommend you to check Lignano Sabbiadoro – Bibione area, not far away from Venice in Northern Italy. You can easily find excellent accommodation option checking the Bibione site where you can find out not only travel information, but also great accomodation offers – apartments, hotels, villas and any other places you can settle in… for a couple of days, weeks or why not, years .
Just, take it easy and follow “la dolce vita” Italian lifestyle.

Italy has become the most preferable tourism place to me with these five individual wonders. Thanks for this post.
Another great post by you. Would like to see more photos.
Italy is packed with amazing destination, but these five make for a smashing intro to the country. Great post!
Pompei! THIS is a place we’re going to see this year. We’ve already booked our tickets and we have excitedly been in the itinerary planning stages for some time now, watching history movies about Pompei and every place surrounding it so we can make the most of our 2 weeks there!
Italy is definitely worth the visit! I’ve been to Rome, Florence, and Rome–all so different, but all so great! The food is incredible, the architecture blew me away, and the Italian accent will never be forgotten. I hope to visit Pompeii and Sicily in the near future
I would have not expected for Venice to be in the top 5 destinations of Italy
